Support safety and compliance with Steelmark’s robust, Australian-standard handrails—engineered for high-traffic areas, elevated platforms, staircases, and walkways. Designed to meet the rigorous safety requirements of AS 1657 and the National Construction Code (NCC), our handrails are ideal for use in commercial, industrial, public, and residential environments.
Steelmark handrails are available in modular and custom configurations, with options in galvanised steel, stainless steel, and powder-coated finishes. Whether you're managing a construction site, outfitting a commercial property, or upgrading aged-care facilities or apartment complexes, our handrails offer strength, stability, and ease of installation.
We proudly supply to Tier 1 builders, construction companies, and facility managers across Australia—helping ensure fall protection, accessibility, and legal compliance at every level.
Handrails in Australia must comply with AS 1657:2018 (Fixed platforms, walkways, stairways and ladders), which outlines:
Minimum handrail height: 900mm for stairs and 1000mm for balconies and walkways
Strength and load-bearing requirements
Clearance space from walls
Specific configurations for mid-rails and toe boards in industrial settings
In residential and public buildings, additional guidance comes from the National Construction Code (NCC) and AS 1428.1 for access and mobility.
Handrails are required on stairs:
Where there are two or more risers
On at least one side of the stairway for residential properties
On both sides for public access buildings or where the stairway is wider than 1 metre
The goal is to ensure users have adequate support when ascending or descending.
In general:
Residential buildings require handrails on one side.
Public, commercial, or multi-residential buildings typically require handrails on both sides if the stairway exceeds 1 metre in width or serves high traffic.
This is guided by AS 1428.1 and the Building Code of Australia.
Steelmark supplies Australian-standard stair handrails for industrial, commercial, and residential applications. We offer both off-the-shelf modular systems and custom-fabricated handrails tailored to your site requirements. Explore options at steelmark.com.au.
Yes. Handrails are considered structural elements and must withstand specific force loads under Australian standards:
Must resist a point load of 0.6kN (kilonewtons)
Often require certified installation and anchoring systems
Their integrity is essential to user safety, particularly on elevated surfaces or fall-risk areas.
Correct. Walkways must have handrails when the surface is ≥1 metre above the adjacent ground or floor level, as required by AS 1657. This includes platforms, ramps, mezzanines, and catwalks. In many cases, mid-rails and toe boards are also required to minimise fall risks.
